RACE organisers, and the sport's governing bodies are continuing to take a responsibility tough stance in the battle against foot and mouth disease. The Fell Runners Association reports that "all National Parks, National Trust, County Council Land and Forestry Commission Land are closed to all access."
All fell races up to and including March 25 are cancelled or postponed. Latest victim is the Half Tour of Pendle on March 24 which was to be the first English Championship Race of the season. Entrants can consider themselves registered for the rearranged race, date to be confirmed. The FRA is considering implications for the Championship.
In what could be a pointer for other sports, the British Orienteering Federation has recommended that all events held in fields, forests or parkland should be suspended for at least six weeks after the last confirmed instance of foot and mouth.
With the cross country season almost over, races are unlikely to be rearranged. The English Schools Championships at Chelmsford on Saturday and the Schools International on March 31, both cancelled, will not be rescheduled. The Mid-Lancs meeting at Lancaster University on March 17 is also off. Road races through rural areas or near to infection have been affected, and the Wilmslow Half Marathon which had taken 3,500 entries was postponed. The Great NW Half Marathon is off, but may be rearranged for May 20. The multi-terrain Roddlesworth Roller at Abbey Village will now be on July 8.
training facilities have also been affected. With Wilson's playing fields at Clayton-le-Moors being closed for 30 days from last Friday, Hyndburn AC are training on at Barden Track in Burnley on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Athletes who can't get there should go to Wilson's for 6pm and lifts will be arranged.
Clayton Harriers will train from Michelin Social Club, Burnley at 7pm on Tuesdays. Accrington Road Runners beginners should meet outside Wilson's at 7pm on Tuesdays, but the main group is switching to Highams Playing Fields. Despite the closure of Astley Park and restrictions at Witton Park and Sunnyhurst Woods, training arrangements for Chorley Harriers, Blackburn Harriers, Blackburn Road Runners and Darwen Dashers are unaffected.
Blackburn Road Runners' annual presentation at noon on Sunday at the Dressers Arms Wheelton is on, but there will only be one training run on offer, starting at 11am. A decision on Darwen Dashers Mad Mid March Relay on March 18 will be taken later.

The Biffa Roddlesorth Roller and Daffodil Doddle, scheduled for this Sunday, has been postponed because of the foot and mouth outbreak.
Provided the epidemic is officially cleared, it has been rearranged for Sunday, July 8.
