A COMMUNITY centre could soon be established in Tottington.
Plans are being drawn up to renovate two derelict rooms in the village library.
The news has been welcomed by villagers who have staged a long-running campaign for the centre.
Mr Mike Ormerod, co-ordinator of Ramsbottom and Tottington Area Board, said: "The rooms are ideal to accommodate community groups and organisations. A lack of funds has meant that the rooms have been out of use and are in a poor condition.
"However, we have had the go-ahead from the library services to refurbish them. The centre will be open during the day and evenings to be used by the village." Funding for the project will be sought from various bodies. Ramsbottom and Tottington Area Board has pledged £6,000 and the police have donated £4,000.
"Cash for the project will have to be found from outside sources such as the National Lottery, but we are really pleased that the police have backed the proposals. It is quite a rare thing to get money from the police and now we are hoping local businesses will be able to offer their support by providing donations or even materials to refurbish the centre," said Mr Ormerod.
A survey is being carried out to establish how much the project will cost. Bury and District Advisory Council have been involved in the plans to ensure there will be facilities to accommodate all members of the community.
