WE would like to respond to Matt Drinkwater's letter headlined "Forget clamping, get some security" (Bury Times, Feb 16).
In early December, the car park at Radcliffe was newly marked in line with current design standards for car parks. There were several reasons for this, including ensuring full unobstructed access for emergency vehicles and to increase the number of spaces from 231 to 253. This includes 14 disabled spaces, which is a legal requirement.
It is paramount that Metrolink car parks are accessible to all and that disabled spaces are kept for those entitled to use them. The car clamping has proved effective, not only at Radcliffe but throughout the Metrolink system, in deterring thoughtless parking and, ultimately, encouraging greater use by disabled customers.
To complete the refurbishment works at Radcliffe, during this week a CCTV camera is being installed in the car park. This will be monitored and video recorded 24 hours a day.
Good news for all our customers! Since the new layout has been introduced, there has been a significant reduction in reports of bumps and scrapes to the cars using the car park.
CHERYL BEVAN,
press and PR officer, Metrolink.
