York Wasps 12 Leigh Centurions 84
THE Leigh Centurions Northern Ford Premiership juggernaut just keeps rolling along writes Mike Hulme
Last night's 14-try demolition of York puts them on track to become one of the few clubs in the game's history to pass 1000 points in a league season.
Their 10th straight NFP win at the Huntington Stadium boosted Leigh's scoring average to more that 45 per game and with 18 games left, the four figure total is a distinct possibility.
Even without seven of their frontline stars, the Centurions had far too much fire-power for the struggling Wasps and within the first eight minutes as Leigh crossed three times, it was a question of how many, not how.
They managed 14 tries in all with Simon Svabic having an immaculate night with the boot, kicking 14 from 14. And had they not had two tries disallowed for forward passes or missed another couple of good openings, the final winning margin would have been well into three figures.
Stand-off Svabic continued his magnificent start to the season with a 36 point haul with two tries to add to his 14 goals. His personal tally was just two behind John Woods' all-time record for points in a game and equalled the landmark set by Neil Turley at Chorley earlier in the season. Svabic was also just one goal away from equalling Leigh's record for goals in a game set by Mick Stacey.
Turley himself crossed for four tries to take his total in 10 games to an astonishing 24. He has now touched down at least once in nine successive NFP games.
Coach Paul Terzis was obviously delighted with his team's night's work.
"It's difficult to motivate yourself for a game like this, but I thought the boys went out there and did a thoroughly professional job.
"Credit to York because they stuck at it and kept trying to play football, but we had too much skill and too much class for them."
Leigh: Turley, Watts, Anderson, Johnson, Jones, Svabic, Bretherton, Leathem, Duffy, Whittle, Baldwin, Morley, Swann. Subs: Gass, Roden, Bradbury, Purtill.
The obvious gulf in class was rammed home inside eight minutes as Leigh let rip with a burst of three tries from Turley, Jason Johnson and Liam Bretherton for an 18-0 lead. By the 15th minute it was 24-0 with the impressive Willie Swann going in for the first of his two.
There was a brief hiccup when York pegged six points back but Leigh were quickly back into their stride and finished the half leading 36-6 with Turley adding two more tries to his tally.
The second half followed much the same pattern as the first - only this time Leigh scored even more points.
Svabic, Martin Roden, Turley and Dave Jones all touched down before the hour mark to send Leigh soaring beyond the half century.
Again York pulled six points back but it was only a temporary respite as Leigh finished with four more tries in the final 17 minutes from Paul Anderson, Svabic, Johnson and Swann.
