PLANS to introduce a Burnley bylaw outlawing the consumption of alcohol on public streets is set to be put on hold by council chiefs -- because it is about to be overtaken by a nationwide ban.
The public protection committee will be told the New Criminal Justice and Police Bill, now going through Parliament, will give power to the police to stop alcohol consumption, confiscate liquor and give courts power to impose £500 fines.
A report to Thursday's meeting says the Bill is proceeding speedily and there would appear little point in pursuing the bylaw option.
The Bill would allow the council to take out orders banning alcohol consumption in designated areas or streets.
Councillors have, in the past, expressed concern over widespread alcohol consumption in streets, particularly the town centre where they say visitors have felt threatened by unruly behaviour.
