SHOOTING STARS: The rifle team of the Bury detachment of the Greater Manchester Army Cadet Force shot their way to victory for the second year running in the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers shooting competition in 1976.
The team were Lance Corporal G. Davenport (15), L/Cpl A. Harrison (16), L/Cpl A Davenport (17) who got the best individual marks in the competition, and Cadet G. Cave (14).
KNICKER NICKERS: Police were hunting the phantom clothes snatcher of Chesham. The washing line prowler had carried out eight raids in just a few weeks with a host of underwear, towels and children's clothing being taken from gardens in the area.
RULE BRITANNIA: Bury Council was told this week to Buy British. The message came from councillors on the policy and resources committee who urged the local authority buyers to support British manufacturers "wherever possible" and those overseas only as a "last resort".
THREE LIONS: Bury schoolboy Craig Wardle was picked to tread the hallowed turf at Wembley in an England shirt. Craig (15) who attended Wellington School, was included in a fifteen-strong soccer squad for the England v Wales schoolboy international after a successful debut at Oxford when England trounced Northern Ireland 5-0 two weeks earlier.
