Leigh East 26 Askam 6 LEIGH East moved a step closer to their promotion dream but struggled to assert their authority over Conference Division One strugglers Askam until late on.
Askam were probably the poorest opposition East have faced this season. Never once in the entire 80 minutes did the Cumbrians look like scoring a try, although this was partly due to East's efforts in defence. Yet it was only in the final 13 minutes that East managed to play anywhere near their true capability.
East's discipline also let them down on occasions and at the half way stage Askam led 6-4 with three penalties from Neil Atkinson. East's first half points came from a Tim Fletcher try in the corner after some strong running out wide by outstanding second rower Mick German.
The home side had a better second half and a good finish from Mark Kay, plus a goal apiece from Anthony Gredecki and John Gunning, gave them a 12-6 lead after 60 minutes.
The game's real turning point came on 67 minutes, ironically following the dismissal of Darren Hall. The full back got involved after Atkinson fouled Lee Penkywicz. He was dismissed but East got the penalty and the impressive Robert Bowdler slide over for a try.
Man of the match Gary Fletcher made a short burst for German to score his first try for the club, John Gunning goaling. With a minute to go Paul Hayes burst through up the middle and send Dale Aldred in at the corner.
East are at home again tomorrow when Heworth are the visitors to Grasmere Street, kick off 2.30pm.
