THE 5th St Peter's Scouts won the first prize in a first aid competition.
The event was held at Union Street headquarters and the competition from the other three Leigh district scout groups was very high. The scouts were assessed on eight different categories, kitchen safety, triangular bandage, first aid quiz, recovery position, immobilisation, minor injuries, first aid kits and burns/scalds. The 5th Leigh division's scores varied from 13 in burns/scalds they got 13 to a poor mark of four in kitchen safety. The judge commented on the Scouts' performances in kitchen safety, saying: "They did not have a serious approach". But it seems that the 5th Leigh Scouts must have been that little bit more determined as their overall score of 70 got them into first place -- above the 1st Lowton and 9th Leigh divisions who drew at 2nd place with a score of 68 .
