PRESTON'S own Olympic archer is on target for even more Olympic success -- provided she can get the funding.
Keen-eyed Vladlena Priestman of Delta Park Drive, Hesketh Bank, already has the Sydney Olympics under her belt, plus a silver medal from the European Grand Prix.
The 33-year-old sportswoman works her training around a job as a lecturer and Russian translator at Skelmersdale College, as well as raising a family.
And the sure-shot who started archery when she was 12, doesn't want success at the next Olympics to slip through her fingers because of lack of money.
Vladlena said: "We do get national funding but sometimes I just don't have enough to go to official events -- flights cost a lot of money, and there are entrance fees."
Attending the competitions is essential, she says, as they give her the chance to improve her skills, gain experience and confidence, and weigh up the competition. All very important, with her sights now set firmly on success at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. "I know what to do and what to expect. It's a lot of pressure, so it makes it easier if I shoot in international competitions all the time. I want to realise my full potential and get to the top, that's why I'm starting now, because it takes a few years."
The Ukrainian born British citizen first came to England in 1996. She met her husband, Richard, a former international archer, and settled in Lancashire.
Obviously proud of him, Vladlena said: "He was in three Olympic games himself, and brought home two bronze medals. He is my coach, but he has a full-time job, so it can be a struggle for us."
They are supported in their appeal for financial backing by South Ribble MP David Borrow.
David said: "Vladlena is one of my constituency's finest sportswomen, representing not only South Ribble but the whole country in events across the world.
"I sincerely hope that any of the businesses in this region would want to enhance the prospects of an athlete from this area."
