THORNTON CLEVELEYS DOLPHINS U9s 0 SOUTH SHORE 5 ONCE again the effort is beginning to pay off and players are improving. An all round 100 per cent effort was made by Matthew McLellan who deserved his man of the match award.
THORNTON CLEVELEYS U10s A 0 SOUTH SHORE 1 A GOOD performance by Chris Newton in goal was the base on which the Lions built their game. The Lions roared when Joe Bowley volleyed a clearance from a corner into the top corner of the net to give the Lions the lead. South Shore equalised two minutes from time to share the points. Two men of the match for this game, Chris Newton standing-in in goal and Joe Bowley, whose work in midfield underpinned this brilliant Lions display.
THORNTON CLEVELEYS U11s 3 WYRE VILLA 0 THORNTON won the game with a good first half performance against a plucky Wyre Villa. Goals came from Nathan Cowgill, Jack Holland and Andrew Brown. The second half saw a resolute Thornton defence stand firm with a man of the match display from centre back Chris Bass.
THORNTON CLEVELEYS U12s 3 YMCA 1 -- HOGAN CUP THORNTON progressed to the semi-finals and made their first half territorial advantage pay with two goals. Sub Bobby Jones, got both goals, each from well-worked approach play. His headerand volley belied Bobbys natural position, which is goalkeeper! A penalty reduced the deficit. Amazingly, as YM pushed men forward in search of more goals, Thornton lost some discipline and only skipper Ben Smith and man of the match Michael Ambrose kept the ship afloat.
THORNTON CLEVELEYS U13s 5 WYRE VILLA 4 THORNTON led 2-1 at half-time with goals from Sean Clancy and Brad Foulkes. After the break Wyre took the initiative and went into a 4-2 lead. Thornton battled hard to get back into the match and late goals from Chris Bright, Paul Carolan and a second from Brad Foulkes gave them victory. Credit to both teams for a very sporting match.
THORNTON CLEVELEYS U15s 6 FOXHALL 0 THORNTON led 1-0 at half-time through Chris Rose. Further goals followed from Adam Shorrocks, Chris Cairns and a hat-trick from substitute Jon Miller, in what was an excellent second half display by the home side. Man of the match for Thornton was Anthony Pearson.
THORNTON CLEVELEYS U17s 4 WYRE VILLA 0 Thornton scored in the first five minutes and never looked in dangerof losing the lead. A superb hat-trick by man of the match Jason Rawcliffe and two by his scoring partner Craig Whitewood gave Thornton victory. A big thank you to the Wyre Junior manager who stepped in and refereed -- he was brilliant.
