Clarets boss Stan Ternent has warned his players to shape up or risk being shipped out.

Ternent was furious with his side's performance in Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday.

And he insisted that he won't be afraid to show players the door if things don't improve.

Ternent said: "We've got 52 points and I think a few of my players feel that the season's finished. It will be finished for some of them if they don't start shaping up.

"I felt that a lot of our players rolled over and I'm not having it. I'll do the best I can with what I've got and when I get the chance to move them on I will, because I'm not going to have it.

"We've gone from the sublime to the ridiculous really and good luck to Sheffield Wednesday, they deserved to win the match.

"But I know if my players play anywhere near their capabilties they're more than capable, with all due respect, of beating Sheffield."

Burnley, so impressive when winning at Watford five days earlier, have already secured their First Division safety.

But they are too far off the play-offs to force their way into the top six and Ternent accused some of his players of resting on their laurels at Hillsborough, where goals in each half condemned the Clarets to a tenth away defeat of the season.

And the boss added: "I'm just angry about it and I know they're so much better than that."

"We've maintained a First Division status, I've already said to the players congratulations and well done for that because that's what we set out to do, but we still have a responsibility and I know they're better than that.

"And if they don't want to do it then I'll get people that do. I've done it before and I'll do it again, because I'm not going anywhere.

"We have another 10 games and Saturday just wasn't good enough for me.The players should be apologising.

"All I want is 46 times an hour-and-a-half which is 69 hours a season. That's what we are paying for so every time that ball moves you should be out there and enjoy it and play with a chuckle in your boots. And if you lose then lose properly. We didn't lose properly."

Although Paul Cook and Graham Branch may be back for next Saturday's visit of QPR, Burnley's squad is currently far from top heavy.

However, he is looking further ahead to bring in the depth to sustain a promotion challenge.

He added: "I don't have a lot of players than I can fiddle around. It may take me some time but I will certainly make some changes.

"We've got to move on. The name of the game is a select and reject process. It's not personal, like I've said on many occasions.

"We've got to move on, that's what's expected. That's my job and I shall do it."

Ternent confirmed that he had received no offers for any of his current players and with transfer deadline day falling on Thursday there may be little major activity at Turf Moor.

The manager is trying to prolong Gareth Taylor's stay but unless any of his other top targets are made available then Ternent may keep what powder he has dry until the summer.
