IT'S all smooth sailing for marvellous musical Anything Goes if Monday's premiere at Blackpool Grand Theatre is anything to go by.

Cole Porter's ocean-bound romance opened in all its glittering glory after just a couple of previews and it's been given the full UK Productions treatment.

And that means everything is De-Lovely from Gemma Craven's sassy, soul-saving singer Reno Sweeney to Jonathon Morris's love-bitten broker Billy Crocker, right down to all the dancers in crisp, white uniforms. Hey, all the nice girls love a sailor!

It's the 1930s and the Press are "gentlemen" who wear belted overcoats, gangsters wear pinstripe suits and trilbies and the man always gets the right girl in the end.

Plot lines are farcical to say the least and the outcome is as crystal clear as Sophia Thierens voice in the role of delightful debutante Hope Harcourt (who by the way had a very vocal fan club in the audience in the form of boyfriend Darren Day). But who cares when there's I Get A Kick Out Of You, Friendship and Blow, Gabriel, Blow on the score sheet.

Gemma is clearly in her element and sings up a storm while sporting a fabulous array of frocks, while Jonathon once again shows there's a hell of a lot more to him than that famous Liverpudlian comedy. He has an impressive array of voices -- one being a remarkable Tim Curry like turn -- a strong singing voice and an easy confidence.

Billy Boyle brings more than a grin as amenable gangster Moonface Martin and Michael Chance is a revelation as the bumbling English Lord, Evelyn Oakleigh.

With a very impressive range of American accents and, hopefully in the future dispensing with a rather unnecessary gypsy-type dance, this horn-blowing, tap-tastic musical is steering a true course for success.

Anything Goes runs until Saturday with evening and matinee performances. For tickets from £7.50 and more information call the box office on 290190.
