THE long-awaited decision on who will stand as Labour's Parliamentary candidate for Leigh will be decided tonight.

The final six nominations were selected by Labour's National Executive Committee after a series of set-backs culminating in some Leigh Constituency Labour Party members and regional officers failing to agree on the selection process.

Labour chiefs at the party's Millbank headquarters in London quizzed 13 nominees put up by local Labour members, trade unions and affiliated bodies and chose a short-list of six: Keith Cunliffe, Andy Burnham, Ian Wingfield, Julie Hilling, Barbara Keeley-Huggett and Jenny Smith.

Tonight at Hindley Green Labour Club, the final choice will be made by Leigh Labour Party to decide who will be Labour's candidate at the next General Election after Lawrence Cunliffe's decision not to stand after 21 years as Leigh's MP.

Around three quarters of the 400 strong membership are expected to vote with almost a third of those by post.
