Special learning sessions boost skills in 16 to 25s YOUNG parents have been given the chance to learn new skills and improve their futures thanks to a pioneering scheme.

Darwen Library has opened its doors to parents aged 16 to 25 and for a special learning session exclusive to the young people.

The sessions are held on Tuesday afternoons, after the library in Knott Street has closed to the general public.

Kath Dixon, an outreach worker at the library is leading the scheme. She said: "The fact it is on a Tuesday afternoon creates a more intimate environment, there is more space to move around which makes access for people pushing prams easier.

"We have set up a creche facility to cater for children, even tiny tots can be accommodated.

"The scheme gives our members the opportunity to use the latest in modern technology and use the internet, this is a great help to people as it looks good on a CV if people can say they are computer literate should they want to return to work," she said.

The future of the library could also be shaped by the group as staff have said the will take into consideration what books the mothers would like to see brought in.

The scheme is operating purely at Darwen Library but if it is successful it is likely to be launched in Blackburn.

So far, eight mothers are taking part in the scheme but organisers are keen to attract more.

Kath Dixon said: "Since the start we have held a number of taster sessions with computers and the reaction has been good.

"We are looking to improve things in the children's library and will bid for some money to get more toys for it. It would be nice to get things for the children and we have applied to the council's community chest."
