SCHOOLCHILDREN and parents say "It's Cool To Walk To School" with Lionel Vinyl this week in a new scheme from Blackpool Borough Council.
Pupils aged between 5 and 14 received an info card recently pointing out the benefits of leaving the car at home, including walking as a great way of keeping fit, avoiding the stresses of parking, helping the environment and enjoying the trees and birds around us.
And yesterday (March 21) parents were asked to walk their children to school where possible and children at Claremont School even had the opportunity to meet Lionel Vinyl as part of the campaign.
But highways chief Councillor Roy Fisher was keen to point out the importance of making sure the journey to school is safe.
He said: "There are many benefits to walking to and from school but it is also important to remember all aspects of road safety and the journey to school provides the opportunity to practise these skills."
Parents who can't walk their children to school have a role to play too as Coun Fisher said: "If you must travel by car to school, park a short distance away from the school gates -- please keep a clear area where children are crossing. Less traffic close to schools creates a safer environment for all."
