PRESTON group RAFFI 'Respect All Fans Football Initiative' has been shortlisted against fierce competition for the highly prestigious BBC ASIA Achievement in Sport Award.

The ASIA awards, (Asian Success, Innovation and Achievement) Awards, supported by Jaguar cars, pays tribute to members of the community who have made a substantial contribution to the British Asian community.

RAFFI is a voluntary organisation made up of a wide-range of individuals who donate their time to provide a coaching scheme which enables children aged between five and 15 to develop their football skills.

The group, managed by Preston and West Lancashire Racial Equality Council in partnership with Preston North End, aims to break down fears of racism both on the pitch and on the terraces, as well as encouraging Asian people to take part in mainstream football.

Idris Selant, Preston's RAFFI co-ordinator, said: "This is a major national award, and simply to be nominated is a prestigious honour in itself.

"Even if we fail to win a prize at the award ceremonies themselves." The award ceremony will be held at Birmingham's NEC on Sunday March 25.

Nina Wadia, star of BBC hit comedy show, Goodness Gracious Me and one of the high-profile judges, added: "The level of entries were incredibly high and made my job an absolute nightmare!

"It's fantastic to see that there are so many wonderful individuals out there who are making a difference to people's lives or making waves in their professions on a daily basis.

"I am truly privileged to be involved in these awards which celebrate these extraordinary people for their inspirational achievements."
