CITY councillors are to press for improved road safety on Meeting House Lane after the tragic death of a vicar there two weeks ago.

The council's transportation committee accepted a proposal from Green councillor Emily Heath to instruct the city and country council road safety groups to urgently review the situation.

Cllr Heath said: "I am hopeful that lessons will be learnt from this terrible accident, and that the County will now speed up its plans to move the traffic lights and stop line further up Meeting House Lane and to give pedestrians more room and time to get across the road in safety."

Castle ward councillor and Green group leader Cllr Jon Barry added: "I am very frustrated that it is taking so long to get these ideas implemented. "We urge the County Council to take immediate action - they could easily add a few seconds' delay to the traffic lights while the plans for the crossings are being finalised. Preventing more deaths must be a priority."
