Wigan RU 16 Leigh RU 8 LEIGH fielded a re-shuffled side and their lightweight pack was on the defensive from the start.
They weathered the early Wigan pressure and edged into a 3-0 lead with a Billinge penalty. But Wigan struck back with a penalty of their own soon afterwards to level the scores.
Leigh responded well and a fine passage of play and pressure was rewarded when the ball was moved swiftly to the left Bridge crossed for an unconverted try. Wigan reduced the deficit with a further penalty when Leigh were unable to clear their lines.
A series of generous penalty awards to the home side saw Wigan fail to take advantage but Leigh again demonstrated a tactical flaw when they ran a simple penalty chance in front of the posts and subsequently failed to score.
Wigan compounded the error by converting a penalty of their own to take the lead for the first time. The home side began to dominate possession in the set pieces and clinched their win with a late converted try.
