A REPORT by the Institute for Public Policy Research labelled the Labour Party's attempts to minimise debate about the European currency in the run up to an election as "naive and decidedly undemocratic." My attempts to raise the issue with Hyndburn MP Greg Pope certainly reflect the policy of "no comment."
The Europe issue has implications for this country's ability to govern itself and to decide and implement independently domestic and foreign policies best suited to the needs of Britain.
During my correspondence with Mr Pope, he has refused to answer directly whether or not he will campaign to abolish the pound if the cabinet asks him to do so, and he has refused to directly answer my concerns regarding the 39 vetoes surrendered by the British government at the Nice summit other than to call the Nice Treaty itself a triumph.
I am aware that people have widely differing views regarding Europe and how future integration will affect future generations. However, these decisions will be made by the British government during the next parliament.
I consider the attempts by the Labour Party to stifle the debate during an election campaign that will select those to whom the decision will fall, a disgrace.
