BURY North MP David Chaytor has called for the borough's doorstep waste paper collection service to be expanded.
He praised Bury's scheme and said that he would like to see it eventually extended to include cans, bottles, cardboard and clothes.
The MP has backed a cross-party motion to introduce a new law ensuring that everyone has a doorstep recycling collection scheme.
It follows a new report from Friends of the Earth which puts the UK near the bottom of the European league table, recycling just nine per cent of domestic waste.
Mr Chaytor said: "Doorstep recycling schemes are still the exception rather than the rule, so it is hardly any wonder that the UK lags behind on recycling.
"Setting up more doorstep schemes would create jobs and be good for the environment."
He added: "The Government has set a target to recycle 25 per cent of household waste by 2010, and one-third by 2020.
"But all the evidence suggests that, even in the short term, we could recycle 60 per cent of household rubbish. It's not rocket science, it's simply a case of being serious about recycling."
