A QUIRK in the fixtures planning sees Pennington and Atherton Town clash again tomorrow in the Manchester League Premier Division just seven days after Town took the honours on the home turf by a 4-1 scoreline.
The victory extended the victors unbeaten run to 12 games and put them third in the table.
The derby game was effectively sealed in Town's favour with two first half goals from an unlikely source, left back Phil Reynolds striking two right-footed volleys.
Former Pennington star striker Daniel Christie was fouled by Stuart Stott for Phil Hornby to fire in the third from the penalty spot and another Town player to shine against his last club was Neil Lewis who got the fourth.
The visitors rallied a little when Neil Critchley's shot was parried by home keeper Gary Osborne and Clark Dobson put in the rebound. Christie won the Leighton Packaging man of the match vote.
The clash of the two Reserves teams also finished 4-1 in Town's favour.
"We have to look to lay the blame at our own door more than anything else," admitted Hindsford manager Peter Barry after seeing his side crash out of the Murray Shield at the Semi Final stage despite always seeming to have the upper hand against visitors Wilmslow Albion.
The Squires Lane outfit took a two goal lead through Matt Toone and Stuart Boddy but gifted the visitors a goal on the stroke of half time. Barry's side started the second period with all guns blazing but in quick succession missed three golden opportunities to increase the lead.
Four minutes into stoppage time a free kick on the edge of the area was taken by a Wilmslow player as the referee had his back to the ball moving the Hindsford defensive wall and he allowed the goal to stand.
In extra time Hindsford again took the lead with a beauty from Matt Toone but the visitor's response was swift and incisive and in the closing minutes they sealed a place in the final catching the home team out pushing forward. Midfielder Darren Briggs was voted man of the match. The Reserves played really well to register a fine 1-1 away draw at Whalley Range. Tomorrow Barry must lift his side for a home clash with the division's form team of the moment Belden.
Leigh Athletic are back in action after a weekend off with a trip to Milton.
