Clarets boss Stan Ternent kicked-off the build-up to next weekend's big derby clash at Ewood Park by admitting : "We owe them one."

Having beaten Queens Park Rangers 2-1 on Saturday with goals from Paul Smith and Gareth Taylor, all Burnley eyes are now focussed on Sunday's high-noon showdown at Blackburn Rovers.

Ternent concedes that promotion-chasing Rovers are clear favourites to take the derby honours for the second time this season.

But the Burnley manager and his players are looking to turn the form book upside down and put the record straight following their 2-0 reverse at Turf Moor in December.

He said: "We've got everything to gain away from home. They need to win. They have to win to maintain it so we should be able to go there and have a go.

"They start as red-hot favourites, which is fair enough, because other than Fulham in my book they are the best side at the moment.

"They've got the best players in the First Division and certainly the strength in depth.

"Graeme has done extremely well. He's bought very well so it will be a tough test for us but a derby match is a derby match so anything can happen.

"And we do them owe one because they beat us here. So we go there in a good frame of mind now and we really look forward to it."

Crucially Burnley avoided any further serious injuries on Saturday, although Kevin Ball required stitches in a head wound, Paul Cook is still not fully over a calf strain and Lee Briscoe is a highly doubtful starter.

"We've got seven days to get over them so we'll have a good week's training. We can't afford to go to Dubai but we'll got to Gawthorpe and prepare the best we can," added Ternent.

Despite riding their luck at times against QPR, tenth-placed Burnley head for Ewood on the back of a decent run of fours win and two defeats in their last seven games.

Ternent was naturally happy with Saturday's outcome, although admitted that a goal for record signing Ian Moore would have been the icing on the cake.

He said: "If I could wish one other thing I would wish for Mooro to get a goal because he's working hard enough but it isn't falling for him. But he'll be fine.

"I think he gets himself a bit frustrated, but I've got Payts who came on and did really well again."

Meanwhile, Ian Cox, who missed Saturday's win over QPR after reporting for international duty, has been omitted from Ian Porterfield's 18-man squad for Trinidad and Tobago's World Cup qualifier in Costa Rica on Wednesday night, according to reports in the Caribbean.

Former Clarets midfielder Micky Mellon was sent off for two bookable offences as Tranmere stayed in relegation trouble with a 2-1 defeat at West Brom yesterday.

However, Mellon, who moved back to Prenton Park from Burnley three weeks ago, will have served his ban by the time Tranmere visit Turf Moor at the end of next month.

The Clarets youth team are bidding to reach the final of the Lancashire FA Youth Cup when they take on Tranmere Rovers in the semi-finals at Turf Moor tonight (kick-off 7.15).
