AN East Lancashire MP has expressed fears that zoo animals including elephants could be hit by the foot and mouth epidemic.
Gordon Prentice asked Government Minister Michael Meacher, in charge of the Downing Street Task Force examining how to protect the rural economy from the crisis, what was being done about the problem.
The Pendle Labour back bencher said: "Foot and mouth strikes cloven hoofed animals -- ones that we are familiar with and others such as the antelope. The elephant can also be affected.
"Will special consideration be given to the plight of zoos which are major visitor attractions? If the outbreak drags on for long, it could put some out of business."
Mr Meacher replied: "I believe that many nature reserves and zoos can open, although that depends on local advice."
After the exchange in the Commons, Mr Prentice said: "While the plight of farm animals is uppermost,we should spare a thought for the creatures in our zoos."
