SOCCER experts are moving in at Gigg Lane on the final day of the season in a bid to get the pitch looking perfect again.

As soon as the Shakers last home match against Wycombe on April 28 has finished a team of specialists will move in.

"They will be skimming the top inch off the pitch and then re-seeding," said chairman Terry Robinson.

"We've taken advice from some pitch experts who have had similar success elsewhere.

"A lot of grounds throughout the country have had the same problem because of the bad weather. Hopefully the action that we're taking will sort it out."

Bury's pitch began to cut up during the cold weather spell in January and wasn't improved when the rugby season started and Swinton began playing at Gigg Lane every other week.

Ironically, despite the poor surface, Andy Preece's side have begun playing some of their best football and haven't lost a match at home since January!

However, it is clear that the poor surface has hindered the team, Jon Newby in particular often struggling to control the ball when bursting forward.

After last week's match against Pakistan, when Preece played for the full 90 minutes, he commented: "I've given the lads a few rollickings lately when they've blamed the pitch for poor play but after playing on it tonight I might have to apologise to them.

"It is bad and really, really hard to play on."
