DRIVERS in the Parkhills area of Bury will have their speed curbed when a new 20 mph limit is introduced.
The measure is intended to complement existing traffic calming measures and was given approval at a meeting of the highways and traffic management committee.
A report has been carried out into traffic and road safety in the area with longer term proposals likely to be implemented at a later date.
It is hoped that new signs along with existing road humps will be effective in slowing down traffic.
The zone covers streets leading off Wellington and Manchester Road, down to Gigg Lane. It includes Killon Street, where six-year-old Shoaib Aftab was recently killed in a road accident as he walked home from school.
But speaking during public question time Wellington Road resident Arthur Withington said: "I fail to see how you can expect drivers to enforce the 20 mph limit themselves when they won't even observe the 30 mph limit."
Mr Withington also proposed that school crossing lights be installed outside Fishpool Primary School.
Committee chairman Stephen Perkins said: "Personally speaking, I can see 20 mph zones in residential areas becoming the norm. We need to get speeds down."
