CHORLEY 2 ASHTON UTD 1 CHORLEY bounced back with a display full of character to deservedly avenge their heavy defeat at Ashton earlier in the month in the UniBond First Division.
The Magpies had much the better of the first half and stretched the promotion-chasing visitors with a series of flowing attacking moves. From one incisive build-up Neil Mitchell ought to have put Chorley ahead, but with just Andy Johnston to beat he shot tamely at the keeper. However, he redeemed himself in style on 34 minutes, cutting inside along the edge of the box before leaving Johnston standing with a cracking low shot.
Ashton levelled in the 40th minute with a scrambled goal by Dean Johnson after Simon Marsh had spilled a free kick. But Chorley hit back again to regain the lead just before the interval. Keith Evans heading in from short range after Danny Mills and Mitchell had seen successive shots charged down.
The second period was comparatively scrappy with the Magpies forced to defend resolutely but couldn't find a way past Chorley defenders Ian Leather and Steve Hook.
