Prescot Cables 2 Flixton 2
THIS was Prescot's fourth game in eight days and the first that they failed to win as relegation-threatened Flixton scrapped for every ball.
The game produced some end-to-end football as both teams went in search of three points. Prescot had the better of the opening stages but found themselves a goal behind after 23 minutes when a snap-shot by McMahon struck the bar and Ivison followed up to head home the rebound.
Flixton keeper Swanson then made three tremendous saves to deny Garforth, Warder and Jensen to keep the visitors in front at the interval.
The opening 20 minutes of the second half was all Prescot with Flixton defending in numbers and blocking a series of shots. Cables eventually got the breakthrough they deserved after 63 minutes when Riley towered above the defence to head home a Williamson corner.
But they were on level terms for only four minutes before a defensive mix-up allowed Pollard to shoot home from close range. And as they went in search of the second equaliser, Prescot were nearly caught on the break as only a fine save by Dahl prevented Flixton from extending their lead.
However, Prescot's pressure finally paid off with just three minutes remaining when Garforth headed home from another Williamson corner.
Great Harwood Town 0 Cables 1
Prescot gained revenge for their defeat by Great Harwood at Valerie Park eight days previously.
Strugglers Great Harwood seemed more intent on playing for a point than trying to win the game and their tactics were to slow the game down and defend in numbers.
Prescot pressed throughout but found it hard to find a way through the massed defence. But just as it seemed that Great Harwood would hang for the draw, with five minutes to go a corner was only half-cleared to Baker who fired in a shot through the crowded area to give Cables a victory that they richly deserved.
Newcastle Town 0 Cables 1
Cables produced a magnificent team performance to take the spoils against fellow championship hopefuls Newcastle.
The only goal of the game came after 22 minutes when Warder hit a tremendous 40-yard cross-field ball that O'Neill took in his stride to get beyond the Newcastle defence before calmly slotting it past the advancing keeper from the edge of the box.
