HAWKSHAW has cancelled its annual Gala in June to protect local farms from possible contamination by the foot and mouth virus.
The decision was taken by members of the committee after consulting with the Ministry of Agriculture over the risks to agriculture.
The gala was first held in 1977 to mark the Queen's Silver Jubilee, and the village festival is due to reach a similar milestone next year.
The chairman of the gala, Mrs Jan Barnes said: ''We've taken the decision in the best long term interests of the village.
"What gives Hawkshaw its special atmosphere is its rural nature. We don't want that to be threatened by any possible risk of foot and mouth infection.''
Mrs Barnes added: "Fund-raising for the 2002 gala will continue and we can guarantee that the Silver Jubilee will be marked by the biggest and best event ever."
