PROPOSALS for a route linking Heysham to the M6 have won the backing of the North West Development Agency and North West Regional Assembly.
The bypass is one of 10 major transport priorities which the two bodies have identified as requiring a high level of commitment from Government.
Lancaster City Council's director of regeneration, John Donnellon, who attended last week's meeting to unveil the North West's Strategic Transport Priorities, said it was clear from the meeting that there is strong support for a bypass.
"The North West Development Agency and the North West Regional Assembly clearly recognise that a link between the M6 and Heysham will significantly strengthen the infrastructure of the region,'' he said. "They see Heysham Port as a key regional asset and their view is that by 2007 a new road access should be provided which will not only link the M6 to the port but which will also serve an important role in acting as a Lancaster by-pass. Their view is that this will help to facilitate regeneration and economic development.
"The council welcomes the support for the link and believes a Western bypass would offer significant potential for that economic growth,'' he added.
