I SEE in last week's edition of the Citizen that Morecambe MP Geraldine Smith joined the ranks of the great local mis-informed by critisizing Homeless Action for helping people find accommodation in Morecambe.

My initial thoughts are whether Ms Smith will be standing at the forthcoming election as the first MBI parliamentary candidate as she is clearly in sympathy with MBI prejudices.

In reality of course, this false Lancaster/Morecambe split is nonsense and merely supports this ongoing 'good residents/bad residents' discourse. I would challenge the Citizen (and other local press) to obtain and publish the list of B&B accommodation that Lancaster City Council itself gives out to homeless people through its Homeless and Housing Advice Unit as I can assure you that every address on that list will be in Morecambe! Hence, to single out Homeless Action is both unfair and misleading.

The only thing that is certain in this debate is that the potential demise of Homeless Action and other housing charities in the area will result in more problems not less.

I don't know whether it's related or not but I could not believe the pitiful amount of cash granted by the authority in cases of exceptional hardship -- it seems to me both the money and the need were there so why not give it out? Few politicos made anything of it and once again it was left to the public and this paper to ask all the questions- Ed
