LEIGH Education Action Zone project director Roland Absalom is taking up a new challenge in Leeds.
As part of the team which in 1998 launched the education project responsible for identifying and maintaining good practice in Leigh schools, Mr Absalom, 54, has seen the venture rise to its current position in the top five education action zones in the country.
Mr Absalom, who leaves today, said: "This is the best place I have ever worked and that's all down to the membership and leadership in the local education community with people who are focused and with no political banter.
"The headteachers in this area are, overall, the most gifted I have ever worked alongside. And all the schools work well with the local education authority.
We have improved academic standards in maths, English and computer skills as well as helping schools to develop vocational education."
Gareth Williams is to take over the position of projects director, a move that has the full backing and support of Mr Absalom.
He added: "I leave knowing the Leigh Education Action Zone will go from strength to strength and a soon to be published report will show how Leigh action zone schools support each other.
