AS someone whose parents had a small-holding in Wales, I would like to sympathise with what the farmers are currently going through.
It cannot be easy for them to have already lost their animals or be constantly looking over their shoulder for foot and mouth to arrive.
Tony Blair and his New Labour Government have constantly portrayed themselves as caring and listening and whether they are or not, I really do not feel qualified to pass a judgement.
However, the Government seems determined to go ahead with the local elections, only a few weeks ahead and a possible/probable general election. It strikes me that if Mr Blair is so caring and even began to appreciate the deep suffering on the nation's farms, then the elections would already have been postponed!
My personal conclusion is that Mr Blair and New Labour's major concern is getting themselves re-elected.
Although I am no longer involved in farming, if these elections go ahead in May I shall show solidarity with the farming community by staying at home. I would urge all voters to do likewise and let all politicians "reap what they sow."
