THE letter from "Honest Driver" (Your Letters, Mar 20) headlined "Hit the car tax dodgers" caught my eye.
On my daily walks around Prestwich and Whitefield I have observed many cars parked on the highway which are either not taxed or the tax disc is out of date.
What "Honest Driver" should do is what I do, drop a line to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency at Trafford House, Chester Road, Manchester M32 OSL. They will not accept telephone calls.
Their stereotyped reply, slightly paraphrased, would be as follows:
"An inquiry officer will visit the area as soon as they can to sight the vehicle. The Agency can use information provided by private individuals only as a starting point for further investigations. We investigate reports of alleged unlicensed vehicles. We do not, however, seek to cover work undertaken by the police or traffic wardens.
"I do fully appreciate your concerns regarding unlicensed vehicles. I can assure you that the Agency does take this matter seriously.
"Whilst the Agency does welcome information from the public, we reply on the assistance and co-operation of both the police and traffic wardens.
"I do appreciate that sometimes it might not be evident to the public that the Agency is taking action. I must emphasise that we have to proceed with due regard to correct judicial procedure, obtaining relevant evidence . . . which can be both complex and time-consuming".
J.K., Whitefield.
