35 SUR SAUVIGNON BLANC, 1999, £4.69, Morrisons and other outlets
IT comes from Chile and if you drink it chilled you'll find it hard to put your glass down. Gooseberries, apple and even perhaps a hint of lemon but the fruit is all ripe. There is none of the sharp, tart flavour that puts some people off Sauvignon Blanc. Sur means South and the 35 is the latitude of the Lontue Valley where vineyards are irrigated by the melting snow of the Andes. Great value.
KIDMAN WAY, Cranswick Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, 1999, £3.99, Morrisons
THIS includes a brief history of Sidney Kidman who ran away from home aged 13 and went on to become a knight and owner of land covering a sixth of Australia -- more than the whole of England. His base was Griffiths, New South Wales, which produces many reds labelled "South Eastern Australia." This 13 per cent example is rich but mellow, blackberryish and will keep. But why wait?
