CLARETS midfielder Paul Cook admitted that Burnley had been left devastated by Blackburn's five-goal burst.

Cook and his colleagues were powerless to halt Blackburn's march towards the Premiership and confessed that the margin of the defeat was hard to take for both players and supporters.

"I think we're all devastated. More than anything we let the supporters down," he said.

"It's a big derby and we've been beaten twice now by Blackburn. You've got to hold your hand up and say they are a very good side. There's no getting away from that but to be beat like that is a bit disappointing."

Burnley had started positively but the early goal they were anxious to avoid arrived after 14 minutes and bar a spirited fightback just before the break there was no stopping rampant Rovers.

"Goals change games," Cook added. "The first goal was poor defending from us. We work on who we are picking up and we weren't in the positions we were supposed to be.

"The second goal was a very lucky goal and all of a sudden they're 2-0 up and the confidence is flowing for them. We tried to keep working, we tried to have a go but it just wasn't to be our day."

The gulf between the two sides was clearly evident in the second half and Cook admitted: "That is what we are aspiring to be. That is the type of team Burnley have got to become. To move on.

"Right through the team they have got quality players. They are fit young lads and all credit to them."

Burnley have now lost four out of five derbies this season but remain tenth in the table and Cook is looking to Friday night's visit of Preston to get a positive season back on an even keel.

He said: "We've had a good season. We're in a great position for what we set out to do with our targets. This was a great disappointment for everyone connected with Burnley Football Club but you have to move on. That is the thing. We have another game on Friday night which we have lift ourselves for and go and prepare properly for."
