A MAN died after collapsing at the wheel of his car in a second tragedy on the roads in the North-west over the weekend.

Mr Roy Whitehead of Mather Avenue, Whitefield, suffered a suspected heart attack seconds before his Ford Escort ploughed into a parked car and a garden wall in Radcliffe New Road, Whitefield, on Saturday at 3.10pm.

Ambulance paramedics gave 59-year-old Mr Whitehead oxygen at the scene after he had stopped breathing. They continued to try to revive him until an ambulance crew arrived and the 59-year-old retired man was taken to Bury General Hospital. Mr Whitehead was pronounced dead on arrival.

A post mortem examination was to be held today to establish Mr Whitehead's cause of death.

Meanwhile, a motorcyclist was killed when his bike careered off a road and crashed into a lamp post.

Brian Sharrott, aged 22, suffered serious head and internal injuries in the horrific crash on the A675 Belmont Road, Belmont, at 5.45pm last night.

Police say Mr Sharrott of Peel Lane, Worsley, was riding a high-powered Yamaha bike towards Bolton when he attempted to navigate a right hand bend while overtaking another vehicle. It is thought he lost control and collided with the lamp post.
