A WOMAN had to be cut out of her car today after it was crushed underneath a wagon at an accident blackspot.

The woman, who has not been named, was driving her Rover Metro along Whalley New Road in Langho when the wagon, travelling in the opposite direction, hit the railway bridge near Langho Station.

Police say the lorry, which was carrying metal cylinders, toppled onto the car.

It then bounced back up before coming to a halt just past the bridge.

Fire crews cut out the woman, who is believed to come from Clitheroe, about an hour after the accident and she was taken to the Royal Preston Hospital by air ambulance.

Just ten days ago another lorry collided with the bridge. Railtrack said the bridge has been hit seven times in recent years.

A police spokesman said today Whalley New Road was closed from York Lane to the roundabout at the junction with the A59.

A spokesman for First Northwestern Trains said the 8.25am Clitheroe to Blackburn train and the 8.59 Blackburn to Clitheroe train had been cancelled but the service would be returned to normal as soon as possible.

Sergeant Stuart Isherwood of Lancashire Police Road Traffic Unit at Accrington, said: "We do not know the extent of her injuries as yet."

The driver of the wagon, which was from Ashworth Construction in Clitheroe, was unhurt.
