A STEAM engine enthusiast travelled from Barnsley to take photographs on the East Lancashire line at Rawtenstall only to have camera equipment valued at £1,135 stolen.
The 53-year-old trainspotter set up his photographic equipment at New Hall Hey at 2.35pm on Saturday.
He went back to his car for a few minutes and when he returned the property including a Canon E230 camcorder, Nikon EM2 semi automatic camera and Nikon 30 by 80 lens, had gone.
Two youths on a V-registered scooter were seen in the area at the time.
Police would like them or any other witnesses to come forward and ring Rossendale CID on 01706 237442 or get in touch with Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555111.
