FORMER physiotherapist Winifred Norman, known as Peggy, celebrated her 100th birthday going out for lunch with her nephew and then having a party at the Danesmoor private rest home for the elderly in Helmshore Road, Haslingden.
Miss Norman worked at Rossendale General Hospital before going into private practice working from the old Haslingden clinic at the Methodist Sunday School.
She started work at 18 at Buxton Hospital, Derbyshire before moving to Haslingden. She used to play tennis at Waterfoot and was a keen pianist.
She was a driver until the age of 90 when she had to stop through failing eyesight. She lived alone in Helmshore Road, Haslingden, until the age of 96 before moving to Danesmoor where she is the oldest of the 22 residents.
On her big day, yesterday, Peggy received a 100th birthday telegram from the Queen and a visit from the Mayor of Rossendale , Coun David Hancock.
