The fatal flaw with our electoral system, is that politicians are usually only measured from their chin upwards! A clever brain and a quick tongue seem to be their chief requirements.
In complete contrast, God looks below the chin and into the heart and says, "He who rules over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God." 2 Samuel 23:3. Intelligence is important but integrity must come first.
It has been well said, "The heart of the trouble is the trouble of the heart!" Christ's cardiogram of the human heart lists these horrible diseases. Evil thoughts, adulteries, murders, thefts, covetousness, blasphemy and pride." Mark 7:21.
Ultimately, the quality of government depends upon where people and politicians put the cross. Not the cross we make with a pencil, but the cross upon which Christ died for our sins.
Ideally, no-one is fit to govern unless they have prayed for pardon from sin through His death and power over sin through His resurrection.
This is the gospel truth and the word 'Gospel' means 'good news'! An obedient response to this gospel fills hearts with God's love and purity and cleanses them from corruption. Romans 5.
It's interesting that Keir Hardie, the first leader of the Labour Party in Parliament in 1906, came to realise that the gospel of Christ provided the best foundation for a happy nation Psalm 33:12.
Because he had too many budding MPs, he said to these enthusiastic young men: "Choose rather to be an evangelist (gospel preacher). It is the evangelist who has the greatest capacity for doing good." It's gospel truth that makes a nation happy.
