POLICE in Darwen are warning homeowners to keep a close eye on their gardens after a spate of plant thefts in the area.
The latest incident occurred in Cyprus Street, Darwen, when thieves stole two hanging baskets from the front of a house.
And staff at the Rainbow Children's Nursery, in Barley Bank Street, Darwen, were left devastated after a selection of plants were stolen from window boxes which the youngsters had planted just 24 hours earlier.
More plants were also taken from outside a house in Schofield Street.
Detective Constable Ian Geogarty from Darwen CID said: "There would appear to be a plant thief operating round the town during the night.
"It is difficult but we are asking people to take precautionary measures to make sure their plants and gardening items are secured by cementing things into the ground or fastening hanging baskets with wire.
"They could also make their own efforts to make things identifiable to themselves by marking things with permanent marker."
If you have any information about any of the incidents contact Darwen CID on 01254 353842.
