HOME Secretary and Labour candidate Jack Straw has backed a former Conservative councillor's bid to retain her seat in next week's local elections.
Labour Party bosses decided to withdraw their candidate for the Pleasington and Livesey seat -- opting instead to back former Tory Edna Arnold.
Coun Arnold was deselected from her seat by local Conservatives after more than 28 years' service, in favour of new candidate Derek Hardman, a former member of the National Party.
Mrs Arnold, a former mayor, is now standing as an independent
Mr Straw said: "She is a good councillor who shares some of the views of the council and works for the good of her ward.
"She has been treated badly and we are happy to support her."
The Liberal Democrat candidate in Livesey is Jessie Hickmott.
