LIKE the author of the letter 'Hell-Hole Of a Town?' (Star Letters - May 31st), I have been upset by the unjust comments made by members of the media about our town since the arrival of Shaun Woodward.
On one edition of 'Have I Got News For You' (May 25th), I was absolutely appalled by Angus Deayton suggesting that it isn't safe to leave your car in St. Helens for fear of it being vandalized or stolen.
I assumed that his emphasizing the word 'Merseyside' when advising his audience of our location was in reference to our proximity to Liverpool, hence the supposition by those in the South that everyone from this area is a vandal or thief.
It is a fact that there are more car thefts in the affluent Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea than anywhere else in the United Kingdom so, statistically, whilst Shaun Woodward could be safe in the knowledge car would be relatively safe when out canvassing, I wonder if the same could be said for Michael Portillo...?!
