I'M awarding a gold star to Alf Fogarty for his remarkable feat of memory in remembering, after a lapse of half a century, the names of all his classmates at Sutton St Anne's School.
The 1950 shot of Alf and his school chums appeared on June 7 when I wondered if anyone could still identify the old knee-pants gang.
"Many thanks for publishing the photo", writes Alf, from Windleshaw Road, Dentons Green. "Some, sadly, are no longer with us, but we were all good mates".
Among them, Keith Foster ("a brilliant footballer"), Harold Pendlebury, John Coffey and Michael Holland who progressed to become a doctor of physics.
Here, based on that flashback photo, is Alf's memory-jerking list -- nicknames and all!
Standing (left to right) were: Joe Topping, John Penders, Harry Maudsley, Jimmy Doyle, Eddie Kennedy, John Coffey, Alf Fogarty, Harry Sephton, Tommy Clarke. Seated: Keith (Keco) Foster, Charlie Beirne, Brian Smith, Harold (Pengo) Pendlebury, Alan Murphy, Michael Holland, Tommy (Timber) Bailey, Billy Stanton. Front: Francis (Ginger) Davies, Alan (Algey) Simpson, Richard (Dicky) Garner.
