Although the League is still refusing to allow a second promotion place for Conference outfits, the clubs have decided to extend their season.

Under the current proposals, agreed at an EGM last week, the sides finishing in second to fifth places will play off to meet the conference champions for a place in the football league. On the plus side, the new proposal will mean many more teams are playing competitive fixtures at the end of the season, and raises the possibility of a less well off team who might not be able to fund a title challenge making it to the Football League.

On the other hand, the conference champions will be well within their rights to feel aggrieved if they miss out on promotion -- especially if they achieve victory by a healthy margin. In other Conference news, Boston United are the latest side to spend big in a bid to achieve league football.
