A TEAM of high ranking Russian MPs and diplomats got a feel for democracy British-style when they arrived in St Helens as part of a fact finding mission on the way the UK parliamentary system and electoral process works.

St Helens was chosen as an "interesting example" as one of the main focusses of Election 2001.

The visit was hosted by the Council, Central Office of Information and the Foreign Office after the Russians said they wanted to visit the town due to the heightened interest in the general election following the selection of Shaun Woodward.

The State Duma Deputies (MPs), electoral commission members and the Director of the Russian Media Association, visited the town hall to discuss election practices and met with Council Leader Marie Rimmer.

A presentation on the electoral process was given by Vivienne Horton, Acting Returning Officer.

They were particularly interested in media handling during an election and the difference between areas where press interest varies. Chris Cahill, the Council's Chief Press and Public Relations Officer outlined the additional media work caused by the massive media interest which generated more than 2,000 international, national and regional press calls during a five week period and resulted in four camera crews and 65 national, regional and local journalists on election night.

The visit was part of a five day trip. Other stops along the way included London, Manchester (for a trip to Manchester United) and Oldham.
