SADEQUATE Baig tried to bite and head-butt police officers called to a disturbance at his girlfriend's home in Fountains Avenue, Blackburn.

The town's magistrates heard that Baig began banging his head on the floor when the officers first approached and had initially been restrained for his own safety. But Baig, who PC Tony Ellison described as 'very strong', struggled violently and it took two officers to put him in the back of a van when he started to head-butt the sides of the vehicle.

Baig, 41, of London Road, Blackburn, admitted a breach of the peace and pleaded guilty to resisting an officer in the execution of his duty. He was bound over in £50 to keep the peace for six months for the breach and given a conditional discharge for 12 months for the other offence. He was ordered to pay £50 costs.

Margaret Duckworth, prosecuting, said paramedics were present when the police arrived and they were having difficulty dealing with Baig. The officers were made aware that shortly before they arrived Baig had hold of a child which had been taken to hospital.

Stephen Parker, defending, said Baig had never been in trouble before and had little recollection of the events. "It was certainly totally out of character for him and was fuelled by the domestic argument and the alcohol he had drunk," said Mr Parker.
