RAMSBOTTOM pipped their great rivals, Pioneer, by one point in a keenly fought top of the table clash on Monday.

The spirited Rascals won 60-59 against the Accrington-based team, in the North East Lancs Friendly league home fixture.

It was quite a contrast to the previous fixture when the Rascals, under team manager John Taylor, hammered Great Harwood Otters 72-47. Taylor, who has been busy rotating swimmers to match the different challenges told the Bury Times last night: "I have been impressed by several members of the team and in particular, Sam Calderbank."

He also mentioned Emma Woods (12), who swam competitively for the first time against the Otters, and Tom Barker, who continues to show his great battling qualities since fighting back from a broken leg.

Taylor brought in a stronger squad for Monday's triumph, which included Laura Hindle who again showed her superb talent in the team, which was led from the front by Emma Hughes.

In the Intermediate league, Ramsbottom were at the Castle Leisure Centre to beat their close rivals, Bury and Elton, by 17 points.

Olivia Sloss was impressive, as were Emma McKenna and Kate Thomason who showed great potential, which is sure to keep the club in the forefront of local swimming circles.

In the Warburton's Gala at Broughton, Gemma Bromby came second in the 100m freestyle final.

Emma Hughes, who has been busy with her exams, picked up a bronze in the 50m freestyle final. McKenna and Jonah Heys came fifth and sixth respectively in the finals.

The committee have been told that the finances of the club are in a healthy state and two club objectives have been put in place - to win both the Junior and Intermediate leagues! Ramsbottom Rascals SC Rivals edged out by Rascals Junior swimming
