DIG DEEP FOR FUINDS; An extra £2,200 was needed by Bury Council to meet the increased cost of filling in graves in the churchyard at St Paul's in the town. More graves were discovered by workmen preparing the cemetery for landscaping as part of improvement plans for the church.
HORSE PLAY: More than 4,000 people turned out to see Black Beauty, the horse of television fame, who was guest of honour at the Tottington and District Horse Show. It was the first horse show in the village for 94 years.
JOBS-LESS: Bury's jobless tally hit a new post-war peak with almost 200 more people out of work than in the January when unemployment reached a then record figure of 1,471. SCOT THE LOT: A Radcliffe family who visited relatives in Scotland returned home to find their house had been ransacked and electrical equipment and clothes valued at £300 had been stolen. The couple and their two small children had only just returned to the house in Radcliffe New Road after living abroad.
TOP SCOUT: Teacher Mrs Nellie Ramsbottom of Haig Road, Bury, became the first woman in the North West to be awarded the Silver Acorn, one of the Scouting movement's highest awards. Mrs Ramsbottom received the award at Windsor from the Duke of Kent. It was for services to handicapped Scouting, spanning 20 years in the Bury area.
BUZZ OFF: Thousands of bees caused a Bury man to flee his home when they invaded his bedroom. Joiner's mate Edward Wrigley of Vale Avenue heard a strange buzzing noise coming from his bedroom and, on opening the door, found the carpet and the whole room swarming with bees. Sulphur bombs were thrown into the room to kill the bees.
