A CAMPAIGN was launched today to bring paving slabs up to scratch.
Hyndburn Conservative council leader Peter Britcliffe has ordered an audit into the state of the borough's paving slabs.
Coun Britcliffe told a meeting of the Accrington Town Centre Regeneration Board that a month of hitting the campaign trail around the borough had taught him more than how to accept defeat gracefully - that the area's pavements were in a poor state as well.
When the board held its annual walk around Accrington last year - which is designed to show members what has improved in the town - several people complained about the poor state of the paving slabs, saying they were an accident waiting to happen.
Coun Britcliffe said: "As I pounded the election beat, I soon realised that nothing has been done about these paving slabs.
"We are talking about lose paving stones which rock as you walk over them, knocking you off your step, ones which splash you when you walk on them."
